I bought some cell phones in Japan
Nokia 6680 / Vodafone 702NKII
This is a major W-CDMA cell phone made by Nokia. This has Symbian OS with Series 60 2nd Edition. But Nokia's new browser application isn't included in this since it is for Series 60 3rd Edition such as Nokia N71/N80. Since Nokia's new browser is based on WebCore / KHTML, it is interesting. But since I love Mozilla products, I should port Minimo? to Symbian OS / Series 60 platform?? But since Symbian OS has several limitation for C++ application, it may be difficult...
As rumor, Nokia may release 3rd edition's cell phone (N71?) in Japan as Vodafone 804NK or Vodafone 704NK. N71 has larger memory than 6680, so I hope that Nokia releases 3rd edition cell phone in Japan.
If I decide to port Gecko/Minimo to Series 60 platform, I will create new Web site after porting NSPR.
Willcom/SHARP W-ZERO3
This is a first product of Pocket PC / Windows Mobile phone in Japan. But, unfortunately, this isn't Smartphone edition, uses Pocket PC edition. So as cell phone, it is a bad product.
And, for inputting Japanese on this, we have to use Microsoft IME. Although most IMEs on cell phone in Japan has forecasting conversion to input Japanese, it has no one...orz... I think that Microsoft is wrongheaded :-(.
W-ZERO3 has mobile version of Internet Explorer. This browser by Microsoft is slow and not convinient. Also, Opera release Opera 8.5 for this cell phone. Although, Minimo might work on this, I switched Opera now.
And, as long as I use W-ZERO3, I felt that phone function seems to optional. But as Windows Mobile, I think that this will be good products. This product has keyboard, WiFi and SD card slot and cost is low (40,000 YEN = about $360). In Tokyo/Japan, most fast-food restaurant has WiFi access point, I can access Web site using WiFi, not cell phone function.
When I want to sync addressbook on Thunderbird to W-ZERO3, there is no way on ActiveSync. No one seems to make ActiveSync provider for Mozilla Mail products. As long as I know, there is same module for Palm (because source code is checked in Mozilla CVS). So, at first, I study how to make ActiveSync provider.
